Faith and Reason

An essay on the dual foundations of human discovery and scientific inquiry.

Faith and reason are two facets of human thought that encourages science. Faith poses the question; reason validates or refutes the hypothesis. Without Faith, there is no fiat lux for anyone. Without reason there is no certainty of anything. You might wonder, “I’m an atheist, I don’t have faith, I don’t have religion!”. It is nothing to do with religion, faith is the posed hypothesis as certainty. Everyone have faith in what ones do, think, in his research, in his projects, etc. Faith is the right we have to believe. Believe that something we will propose has value.

A mathematical theo-rhema (θéο-ρéμα) a divine-word, says everything. A mathematical theorem is a spoken truth, and truth is divine. Reason from Latin reo, means think, gave birth to the word real, in English. Something that has also a divine status, for “real”, also relates to rulers, like kings, emperors, and the like, that were considered to be a divine being, and acquainted with the gods, and what a king does (before parliament reformations) is to give law, and its law is granted as divine, as well as his right to rule. What a king speaks is true by reason.

Reason is, therefore, a way to settle a hypothesis through experimentation, into laws, that are generalizations of experiment’s outcomes, into a precise, and predicting, system. Like Newton’s Law of Gravitation

Newton’s Law of Gravitation
$$F = G\dfrac{Mm}{d^2}$$

and the Einstein’s Gravitation

Einstein’s Gravitation (Trace-Reversed Form)
$$R_{\mu\nu} = \frac{8\pi G}{c^4} \left( T_{\mu\nu} - \frac{1}{2} T g_{\mu\nu} \right) + \Lambda g_{\mu\nu}$$

Which extended Newton’s thought to another level of understanding. Einstein, since he was a boy, had faith in his hypothesis, and he passed a great deal of personal and scientific strain to have them proved, finally, by a great astronomer, Sir Edington.

We should not loose our faith in ourselves, and our ideas, for there is no hypothesis that should not be proposed, and experimented. For Faith and Reason are gifts from God, and they must not be impeaded to be exercised freely by any human being in the world.
